Art Docent  Lesson -- Matisse

 

Grade: Kindergarten

 

Theme: Shapes, Positive & Negative Images

           

Artist: Henri Matisse

 

Main Print:  Beasts of the Sea

Support Prints: Other Matisse Prints; Thousand & One Nights, Icarus from Jazz, Toboggan, etc

 

 

Supplies Needed:

            Colored construction paper, white paper for background, glue stick and scissors

 

Activities

1.      Review Shape names – ties into class lesson

Preparation: Cut paper shapes

 

2.      Positive & Negative Hand Prints

Preparation: Cut 9x12 sheets of colored paper in half for a 9x6 rectangle one for each kid. Can use two main colors.

Activity: Each kid picks 1 half sheet and a full sheet – each a different color,

Help them trace the hand onto the smaller sheet  and cut out the hand being careful to save both parts – the hand and the outside image.

 

 

Glue the positive hand on one side  of the sheet and glue negative on the other side of the sheet to show positive and negative shapes as shown above.

           

3.      Make your own Matisse Paper Abstract Art

Preparation: cuts tons of colored construction paper shapes, positive, negative, lines, spirals, squares, triangles, hearts, circles, etc. to give each group of kids a stockpile of shapes

Activity: Glue shapes into paper to make their own abstract art picture
