 This week’s required assignments:

  • READ EVERY DAY (OF COURSE!) – log your reading IN YOUR BINDER
  • STUDY MATH FACTS – Your goal is to reach 100 correct. Check out the web site, or use flash cards!
  • MATH – Complete the attached sheets for review
  • Writing – Think about Jeff Fishkin in There’s a Boy In the Girl’s Bathroom. That was an embarrassing moment for him. Think of a time you were embarrassed. Tell the story of that time in one page. Remember to use the writing process. The final copy should be a clean edited copy.

We are off to a great start. I am excited about the year, and the kids seem to be geared up for a great year. I can see the benefits of having the same group already! This is the 1 st homework packet. Please, look it over and give me any comments that you may have. This is a little new for me. Remember, there may be additional homework assigned during the day, if work is not completed.

Also, try to check the website regularly. I will try to update it often. I will be posting these assignments for reference as well. Have a great weekend!

  • READ EVERY DAY (OF COURSE!) – log your reading IN YOUR BINDER and record your total number of minutes spent reading on the back of this sheet
  • SCIENCE- Figure out how much water you use in a day by filling out the table in this packet. Extra Credit: How much water do you use in a 7-day week in each category and in total?
  • MATH – Some worksheets to practice what we learned in class are in this packet.
  • SCIENCE / WRITING - In several paragraphs, explain how the water cycle works to a 1 st grader. Be sure to use the words “evaporation”, “condensation”, and “precipitation” in your explanation (I know, they’re big words for a 1 st grader, but you can make them understand J ). You can include a diagram too, if you’d like (not a substitute for writing).

  • MATH – Some worksheets to practice what we learned in class are in this packet.
  • Social Studies / WRITING - Complete your colonial character trade poster. The poster should be covered edge to edge with color. Your poster should be one of the following:
  • A sign that would be displayed outside you shop.
  • An advertisement for your business highlighting your services or products.
  • On the back, attach a 1-2 paragraph description of your trade and the services you provide. You might also include a description of the customers you sell to.

 We continue to be off to a great start. Have a fantastic week! We will be starting our simulation about the struggle for independence around October 9 th. I am planning to have a celebration at the end with a colonial style masque (i.e. Halloween). I have a few recipe books with colonial recipes. If you would be willing to help prepare one of these recipes, please let me know. I would also love for help in creating masques and teaching 18 th century dance (I have some dance materials!)

Also look for an email from me for volunteer help!

  • READ EVERY DAY (OF COURSE!) – log your reading IN YOUR BINDER and record your total number of minutes spent reading on the back of this sheet
  • MATH – One worksheet to practice division skills learned in class is in this packet.
  • Social Studies - Complete your colonial character trade poster if it has not been completed. The poster should be covered edge to edge with color. On the back, attach a 1-2 paragraph description of your trade and the services you provide. You might also include a description of the customers you sell to.
  • Science – Complete “Dirty Work” included in this packet.
  • Writing – Choose a character from the book you are reading to write a solid character sketch paragraph on. Use the directions on the “Character Development” page included to guide you through the paragraph. Your paragraph should have complete sentences and appropriate vocabulary and punctuation.
  • Field Trip – Please return the attached permission slip as soon as possible.

  • MATH – 2 worksheets to practice division skills learned in class is in this packet.
  • Social Studies / Writing – Look at the page of Washington ’s Rules of Civility. Choose six rules to rewrite in modern English on a separate piece of paper. Also, come up with our own list of 10 “Classroom Rules of Civility.” They should be spelled correctly and complete sentences.
  • Field Trip – Please return permission slip as soon as possible.
  • Remember to choose item off the “Ideas for Independent Work” sheet if you finish early and need more work to fulfill homework time requirements !

  • MATH – 2 worksheets to practice division skills learned in class is in this packet.
  • Social Studies / Writing – The Seattle Times News Break – Read the attached article in the Northwest Life section of the paper. Answer the questions on the activity sheet using complete sentences for the Headline section. For the Activity section, think of something that is HOT now. Answer this question using complete sentences. How might this HOT trend or item help someone 100years in the future understand us.
  • Spelling – Remember to work on spelling. Everyone is on List 5. These words are word you should know by the end of 5 th grade. Tests will be taken in class on the computer. You must take a test on each list until you pass it 3 times at 90% or higher.
  • Remember to choose item off the “Ideas for Independent Work” sheet if you finish early and need more work to fulfill homework time requirements !

We will be having our 1 st Congress – The Stamp Act Congress - on Tuesday. Review the “Rules of Procedure” in your Independence Student Guide and the proposals for CRISIS #1 – The Stamp Act Congress. Be prepared to speak on at least 2 of the 7 proposals during Congress.

  • READING/SCIENCE – Read the article about shrinking glaciers and answer the questions.

Notes from Mr. Langley

Here’s some of what we’ve been up to:

  • Math : We’re finishing up division and some algebra and moving on to geometry next week. There is a test on long division Monday.
  • Science : The students have tested how natural obstructions like rocks and hills affect the flow of water. They are now seeing how man-made structures (dams and levees) change water flow.
  • Writing : We are doing research on people and events of the Revolution. We are taking notes and will be organizing our information to write this next week..
  • Social Studies: Students just had their first “Congress.” We will have or “1 st Continental Congress” on Monday..
  • Art : The Colonial Masks turned out great! Thanks for all your help. A special thankyou to Amy Liddicoat for organizing the mask making and Kathy Vitz for teaching us the Virginia Reel. We had a great time!

COMING UP*:

  • Wednesday, November 8 th – Math Night – come play games! Book Fair, too. If you come to Math Night and spend an hour or more here helping teach math games, you will not have to do homework the following week (unless you still want to J ).
  • Friday, November 10 th – Veteran’s Day, no school
  • November 13 th-21 st – Conferences, 1:10 dismissal. I will send home a confirmation next week via email and paper.

This week’s required assignments:

  • READ EVERY DAY (OF COURSE!) – log your reading IN YOUR BINDER
  • MATH – Play “Farkle.” If you need dice, let me know, and I will check out some to you. Play at least one full game. Try to keep track mentally as much as you can during your turn.
  • Writing – Create your own math dice game. Write the rules and come up with a catchy title.
  • Art – Illustrate a scene from a book you are reading. Use lots of color. Write a description of the scene on the back.

  • Social Studies: We will be having our last congress on Tuesday where we will decide for independence or not. This has been exciting and I am looking forward to more great experiences this year.
