Dear Families,

The second grading period saw every student making progress in all academic areas.

In reading, a significant number of students are already approaching the district standard. This allows us to dedicate more time to more challenging materials

and expand our reading into other subject areas: science, math and our

upcoming field trips.

In math, I am using the new district evaluation that coincides with the Everyday Math curriculum.

In science we will continue to explore scientific methods through an inquiry-based approach. Our weather unit is finished and in April we will begin a Balls and Ramps unit. We’ve begun our Study of Birds in preparation for our field trip to Green Lake. You can help your child by pointing out birds and their behaviors in the neighborhood or around Green Lake, Shilshole, or City Parks. This in conjunction with our field trips to the Ponds, Beach, International Children’s Festival and Waterfront will certainly keep us busy.

Students are showing signs of maturity and responsibility. Homework is turned in on time everyday, and minutes read at home are paying big dividends. Your support helps students realize how much you value their effort and hard work.

Please remember to praise your child’s efforts and note their improvements.

I am very proud of all of them.

As always feel free to contact me with questions or concerns you may have regarding your child.

Sincerely, Martin McGowan
