What's Happening in Room 202?

We have been very busy the last couple of weeks! I hope you had fun completing your Math About Me projects at home. They look great in the hall, and the students were excited to share their meaningful numbers. I also hope you have enjoyed playing the math card games Turn Over 10 and Tens Go Fish. The students are becoming more proficient with number combinations and can create some pretty incredible equations when we do our daily “Today’s Number” math warm-up. In reading, we have been reading a collection of “Silly Stories.” Students created story maps to plan their own silly story to write, then wrote their first drafts in their journals. Ask them what their silly story is about. They had some amazing ideas! We are continuing to explore word families through word family poems. Be on the lookout for them coming home, and practice reading them. Students use highlighters to identify words that belong to the identified word family. Congratulations to our first two Check It Out class winners this year, Maci and Briana. Many other students have received the slips for good behavior. Keep up the good work. We continue to work on good listening skills in second grade, so remember to encourage your child to listen to your directions the first time at home as well. We will begin our first Science unit on Liquids next week. They will be assigned Science homework on Tuesday 9/26, due by Monday, 10/2, so during this time they will not have the usual nightly math to do. Continue to work on weekly Spelling lists, however, and to do your 20 minutes of reading for the calendar!

Parent Volunteers

A HUGE thanks goes out to all of the fabulous parents in Room 202. I am so lucky to have so many supportive and helpful parents! Look for the parent volunteer schedule in your child’s backpack—it was sent home Monday.  Kay (Will’s mom) created our wonderful Snack Schedule for the year. Look for it soon on our new class website being designed by Karen (Leverious’ mom).  It is now under construction! I also sent home a hard copy of the snack schedule. Thanks goes out to Lee and Starla (Briana’s parents) for the great stool for the front of the classroom and items for the class store, and to Kathy for store items. Chrissy (Colby’s mom) made our class set of place value pockets for  the popsicle sticks. Denette (Carmen’s mom) has supplied our class with pencil grips for learning correct finger positioning as well as items for our store. We will begin using these grips when we start handwriting instruction with  Jennifer (Wren’s mom). She could use a few assistants with comb binding our books. Please call her at 789-6975 if you are able to help with this. There have been many more acts of kindness from our great parents. Thank you all.

What's the Buzz?

The Buzz Group theme Oct. 2 will be “Silly Stories.” Bring a book to talk about for our silly story theme. You will do a short book talk about it with your group.

STROUD CROWD NEWSLETTER > September 6, 2006

Welcome to the Stroud Crowd!

I hope you have had a wonderful summer and are ready to begin an exciting new year of learning! This year we will learn about soils, liquids, and balancing and weighing in Science. We will write in many forms, including poetry, reports, letters, and narratives, while using graphic organizers to organize and plan our thinking. We will read many different genres of literature and respond to our reading in a variety of ways. We will view the world around us as mathematicians and scientists, and will explore our community and make connections to our learning by going on field trips. In math, we'll work hard to communicate our thinking and solve problems. We'll learn about the human body and about the world around us by doing Daily Geography activities. We'll learn the importance of working together to reach a goal and about getting along with others. We have a very busy year ahead with many fun projects to do!

Parent Volunteers

Volunteers are the key to a successful classroom. I plan to use volunteers in a variety of way throughout the year. I like to take the first couple of weeks to establish a routine and set the expectations and procedures with students before utilizing my regular "in-class" volunteers. Until then, there are plenty of tasks that can be completed at home if you are eager to begin helping! Please fill out the volunteer survey sheet sent home on the first day if you are interested in being a classroom volunteer, and I will contact you. I will also talk more about volunteers at Curriculum Night on September 14th at 6:30. Please mark your calendars and come ready to learn more about procedures, expectations and curriculum, as well as with any questions you may have for me.

Reminders

  • Curriculum Night is on September 14th at 6:30
  • Your child's papers will come home on Fridays in his Friday Envelope. Please remove and review all papers, sign the envelope, and return it on Monday.
  • Reading Challenge Calendars are a way to record reading done at home and should be returned at the end of each month.
