Lori Osseward is the founder of three chess programs for the Seattle Public Schools at West Woodland Elementary School, McClure Middle School, and Ballard High School. She has been teaching and coordinating chess programs for both private and public schools in the greater Seattle area for ten years.
In 2001, in recognition for outstanding service to children and youth, Lori Osseward was presented with two Golden Acorn Awards from the Washington State PTA. She is the curator of two exhibitions with the Seattle Art Museum, “Art in Chess and Chess in Art” in 2002 and 2004. She has worked with children in creative fields for over twenty-five years, after receiving her B.F.A. and B.A. from the University of Washington, privately studying with Jacob Lawrence, and participating in graduate work on full scholarship at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, in Paris, France.
She is an active board member of the Chess Mates Foundation, and is the parent of two boys who are in honors programs and on the Varsity Chess Team at Ballard High School. For her work in chess education, she has received grants from both the Seattle Public School’s Superintendent’s Office and the Alliance for Education.
